In South Africa, XAU is a word from an extinct Bushman language.
It means to shoot a magic arrow or go on a magical expedition.
Apartheid tried to erase millions of Indigenous people, flattening centuries of language, culture, and identity into a single word, ‘coloured’. The wounds run deep. Sylvia goes in search of what was denied and stolen… Language, dignity, story and even the bones of her Ancestors.
XAU – OUR STORIES IN OUR BODIES is a film about what happens when trauma becomes resilience.
