Nautilus is a documentary series of 6 10-minute episodes that explores the dialogue between art and science through the observation of marine biology. Directed by Jérôme Gelès and Pascal Auffray, and in collaboration with researchers from the Oceanological Observatory of Banyuls-sur-Mer, the series highlights cutting edge scientific research by translating it into artistic works.
Each episode follows a researcher working on a specific topic, such as marine bacteria or bioluminescence, and documents their work in the lab and field. In parallel, Jérôme Gelès creates works inspired by these discoveries, offering a visual and plastic interpretation of scientific processes. Thanks to an immersive staging, attentive to reality and at the same time full of fantasy and poetry, the series offers an original approach where artistic experimentation enriches the understanding of the living.
Nautilus brings out a new perception of scientific research, highlighting curiosity and wonder as common drivers for the artist and the scientist.
